Gum Health Is the Foundation of a Healthy Smile
Periodontal disease (gum disease) affects far more than just your gums—it’s one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults and is linked to serious systemic health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation. At Riseley Street Dental, we take gum health seriously. Our approach to periodontal treatment is comprehensive, evidence-based, and tailored to each patient’s needs.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures around your teeth. It starts with gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding gums), and can progress to periodontitis, where bone and tissue are permanently damaged.
Signs of periodontal disease include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
- Gum recession or teeth appearing longer
- Loose teeth or drifting/movement
- Swollen, red, or tender gums
How We Treat It

- Comprehensive Assessment - We measure gum pockets, assess bone levels using digital X-rays, take detailed records and high-resolution DSLR images to establish a baseline, and determine the extent of infection and inflammation.
- Airflow® + Ultrasonic Debridement - We use the EMS Airflow® system combined with advanced ultrasonic instruments to thoroughly remove biofilm, tartar, and bacteria from beneath the gum line. This non-surgical deep cleaning is highly effective, more comfortable than traditional methods, and reduces inflammation.
- Staged or Quadrant-Based Therapy - For moderate to severe cases, treatment may be completed over several visits to allow thorough debridement and healing between sessions.
- Ongoing Maintenance - Periodontal disease can’t be “cured” but it can be controlled. Patients with a history of gum disease require more frequent maintenance appointments (often every 3–4 months) to keep the infection from returning.
- Education + Home Care Support - We’ll guide you through specific brushing techniques, product recommendations, and at-home routines to support long-term gum stability.
Our Hygiene Team: Focused on Prevention and Periodontal Care
Our hygiene team plays a central role in managing periodontal health. With advanced training in periodontal care and biofilm therapy, our Oral Health Therapists provide the majority of ongoing maintenance and supportive periodontal therapy. They work closely with our dentists to monitor gum health, track progression or stability, and ensure you’re receiving consistent, high-quality care over time. You’re never just “in and out for a clean”—every visit is deliberate, detailed, and collaborative.
Referral for Complex or Surgical Cases
If your condition is advanced or requires specialist intervention—such as gum grafting, complex surgery, or regenerative treatments—we work closely with trusted local periodontists to ensure you receive the highest level of care. We’ll help coordinate your referral, send comprehensive records, and remain involved in your long-term care before and after specialist treatment.
