Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last teeth to erupt—often in your late teens or early twenties—and they don’t always play nice. Whether they’re painful, infected, or impacted, wisdom teeth can cause real problems. At Riseley Street Dental, we assess and manage wisdom teeth with precision, clarity, and patient comfort in mind.
Common Problems Caused by Wisdom Teeth
- Pain, pressure or swelling at the back of the jaw
- Gum inflammation or infection (pericoronitis)
- Difficulty opening the mouth or chewing
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or neighbouring molars
- Cysts, crowding or bone loss around adjacent teeth
- In some rare cases, even fractures of the jaw
Even if you’re not feeling pain now, impacted or poorly positioned wisdom teeth can silently cause long-term damage if not monitored.

How We Assess Wisdom Teeth
We take a thorough clinical exam and high-resolution OPG (panoramic X-ray) to evaluate:
- Position and angle of the teeth
- Proximity to nerves and sinuses
- The risk of problems in the future if left untouched
- Whether extraction is appropriate, and if so—how complex it may be
Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Not always. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, and easy to clean, they can often be left alone. But if they’re impacted, partially erupted, or creating ongoing issues, removal is often recommended to prevent further complications.
How Do You Remove Wisdom Teeth, and Can I Be Asleep for It?
Wisdom teeth are removed using gentle, controlled surgical techniques—usually involving a small incision in the gum, careful sectioning of the tooth if needed, and placement of dissolvable sutures. You won’t feel any pain during the procedure thanks to effective local anaesthetic, and we always take the time to ensure everything is done with precision and minimal trauma. If you’re anxious or simply prefer not to be fully conscious during the procedure, we offer both oral sedation and IV sedation options right here in the clinic. With IV sedation, you’ll be completely asleep and won’t remember a thing—ideal for nervous patients or more complex extractions. We’ll talk you through your options and help you choose what feels right for you.

Recovery is usually smooth, especially when issues are caught and managed early.
What’s Recovery Like After Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Recovery time can vary depending on how many teeth are removed and how complex the procedure is, but most people bounce back within a week. You can expect some swelling, discomfort, and limited jaw movement for 7 days, which is usually well managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relief. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions, including what to eat, how to keep the area clean, and what to avoid (like straws, smoking, or vigorous rinsing). Sticking to soft foods and resting for a couple of days makes a big difference. Most people are back to normal routines within a week—and we’re always available if you have concerns during healing.
